OKIE

COMICS

"Okie Comics are by Oklahomans for Oklahomans. We publish a bimonthly anthology of stories from one to twelve pages in length. Each story should be local, whether directly from Oklahoma’s rich history, set in Oklahoma’s familiar locations, or in a theme that evokes Oklahoma culture, from our wild weather to our Sooner spirit. Within that scope, we can have everything from nonfiction to comedy to romance to science fiction and beyond!"

FEATURED OKIE COMIC

MIKE KENNEDY

When did you start drawing?

I’ve been actively drawing since I was around 6 years old. I really don’t remember anytime I wasn’t drawing, although I didn’t receive any formal training till my first year at the University of Oklahoma.

What are your favorite things to draw?

I’ve always liked drawing people. The human anatomy is fascinating because it is an amazing design of bone, tissue and muscle. And seldom are two just alike.

Who are some of your artistic inspirations?

My first is Jack Kirby, because he and Steve Ditko are the artists I was exposed to growing up. Comic art is what got me hooked. Will Eisner also, because his style of storytelling is the gold standard. He gets the reader to follow him into his stories whether it’s the Spirit or any of his life in New York City graphic novels. Then there’s John Buscema, John Byrne, Frank Milller, Mike Mignola, Jason Pearson just to name a few that have influenced me over the years.

Any projects you’re working on or looking forward to working on?

I just finished the last chapter of “Shifters,” and I’m still involved with “Celtic Knights” both in print and web comics. I’m also working towards my teaching degree in art, so I stay pretty busy these days.

What’s a good way for fans to check out your work?

Follow me on Facebook, my deviant art (roughcutpresents), and our webcomic Fallout on Comic Crusaders, comiccrusaders.com.

ABOUT OKIE COMICS

Oklahoma holds a thriving comics community with artists and writers publishing dozens of independent works. In addition to our year-round comic shops, the metro area also hosts conventions where crowds of thousands gather from all over the state—SoonerCon, New World Comic Con, and OAFCon, just to name a few!

Okie Comics Magazine is the next development in the blossoming world f Oklahoman art. This quarterly, free periodical serves as a showcase anthology for local creators telling local stories, whether directly from Oklahoma’s rich history, set in Oklahoma’s familiar locations, or in a theme that evokes Oklahoma culture, from our wild weather to our Sooner spirit.

Four times a year, 30,000 printed copies of Okie Comics Magazine are delivered to offices, libraries, restaurants, and other places of business as points of distribution to the public. In addition, digital copies are placed online, accessible through social media and email newsletters. Each issue will reach an estimated 150,000 readers.

Art needs patrons, and Oklahomans are famous as neighbors supporting one another. Okie Comics is funded through advertising, which provides local businesses the chance to be recognized for their support of art and the community. All comics also center in Oklahoma, meaning popular locations and events will appear in the stories themselves.
